Hospice


Purpose

  • The Hospice Program consists of professionals and volunteers administering special services to terminally ill patients and their families.
  • Services are available to persons in Craighead, Lawrence, Poinsett, Greene, Randolph, Mississippi and Jackson Counties.

Goal

  • To promote patient comfort by minimizing pain and other distressing symptoms and to provide support.

Team Approach

  • Utilizes a team approach in providing services in the home. The team is composed of:
    • Family
    • Medical director
    • Attending physician
    • Registered nurse
    • Volunteer coordinator
    • Social worker
    • Pastoral care
    • A registered nurse coordinates the medical services under the direction and supervision of the attending physician.

  • Medications for pain and symptom control

Volunteer Staff

  • Assists the team in providing comfort care by providing a wide range of supportive services for patients and their families.
    • Visits/phone calls
    • Transportation
    • Staying with patient
    • Listening and caring
    • Limited homemaking chores and babysitting

Families

  • Hospice offers families the opportunity to be actively involved in caring for their loved ones.
  • The patient and family are in control of their care and environment while living their last days to the fullest in the comfort and security of home.

Funding

  • Hospice services are covered by Medicare, Medicaid, Champus, most private insurance and private pay.
  • Donations and memorial contributions help fund hospice services.
