Pharmacy Residency
Welcome to St. Bernards’ Pharmacy Residency website. The PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program conducted by St. Bernards Medical Center has an accreditation status with ASHP. Pharmacy residents will be exposed to a variety of learning experiences and have the opportunity to select from numerous elective learning experiences. The program prepares residents to gain additional skills in leadership and management, research and precepting. Our preceptors are devoted to enhancing the resident's learning experience and take pride in their commitment to the program.
Purpose: PGY1 residency programs build upon Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals, and objectives. Residents who successfully complete PGY1 residency programs will be skilled in diverse patient care, practice management, leadership and education and be prepared to provide patient care, seek board certification in pharmacotherapy (i.e., BCPS), and pursue advanced education and training opportunities including postgraduate year two (PGY2) residencies.
- Two positions are offered each year
- Residency applications are due by Jan. 2.
- The program begins in late June and lasts a duration of 12 months.

St. Bernards is a 440-bed community hospital in the heart of Jonesboro, Arkansas. Our mission is to provide Christ-like healing to the community through education, treatment and health services. We serve as the regional referral center for 23 counties in northeast Arkansas and southeast Missouri.
We are dedicated to the future of healthcare, serving as a teaching site for students of nursing, respiratory therapy, physical therapy, pharmacy, medicine and many others. St. Bernards also has an established Internal Medicine Residency Program and serves as the teaching site for the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) Northeast Family Medicine Residency Program.
Our Mission
Our mission is to improve the quality of life of everyone we meet, in all that we do. We provide high-quality, evidence-based, cost-effective care and foster an environment for professional growth that contributes to strong interdisciplinary relationships and provider and coworker satisfaction.
Our Role
Centralized pharmacists participate in order verification and medication distribution. Decentralized pharmacists serve as the core of our clinical practice, with a presence on most of the hospital’s medical floors, St. Bernards Behavioral Health, and in the Flo & Phil Jones Hospice House at St. Bernards.
Pharmacists use clinical surveillance software to assist with pharmacokinetic dosing, renal dosing, antimicrobial stewardship, anticoagulation monitoring, IV-to-PO conversions and opioid stewardship. Pharmacists are involved in medication-use evaluations, adverse drug event monitoring, protocol and order set management, interdisciplinary rounds and committees.
St. Bernards serves as a teaching site for the UAMS College of Pharmacy, Harding University College of Pharmacy and the University of Tennessee College of Pharmacy.
