Depression Treatments

If medication doesn’t give you enough relief from depression, ask St. Bernards Healthcare about two additional options: transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and Spravato nasal spray.

TMS Therapy

TMS treatment uses magnetic pulses to “wake up” parts of your brain, making it release chemicals that improve your mood. This noninvasive treatment takes just 20 minutes a day. Each session, we place a cushioned coil on your head, and mild pulses stimulate your brain. You might feel tapping, but not pain. Feel free to read, watch TV or just relax during treatment. Right afterward, you can drive home or return to your activities.

Treatment usually involves 36 daily sessions, five days a week at St. Bernards Behavioral Health Center. We’ll try to accommodate your schedule and get you in and out as fast as possible.

Proven to Relieve Depression

Most insurance providers cover TMS therapy because evidence shows it works. A study found:

  • 83% of patients who completed treatment felt an improvement
  • 62% of patients had full remission, meaning they were no longer depressed

Spravato Nasal Spray

Improve your mood in as little as one or two days with Spravato nasal spray. If you qualify for this treatment, you’ll visit St. Bernards Counseling Center to use the spray twice a week for a month, and once a week after that. Treatment can make you sleepy and increase blood pressure, so you’ll stay here for a couple hours while we watch your vital signs. Ask a loved one to drive you home after treatment.

Research shows Spravato plus oral medications can reduce depression more than medication alone. Ask your health insurance provider if your plan covers the nasal spray.
