Interventional Radiology

Interventional radiologists at St. Bernards Medical Center treat health conditions in the least invasive way possible. Rather than making large incisions, these doctors rely on real-time imaging guidance to see inside your body during a procedure. That means a faster recovery and a quicker return to the things that matter to you.

Removing Blood Clots in Veins

Blood clots slow the flow of oxygen to certain areas of the body, sometimes causing pain or organ damage. When a clot forms in a leg, it’s called deep vein thrombosis (DVT). If that clot travels to your lungs, it’s called a pulmonary embolism (PE). Both are serious health conditions.

To treat DVT or PE, interventional radiologists can perform a thrombectomy procedure. They use tiny tools made specially for removing blood clots from veins. That means you may not need:

  • Clot-busting medicine that increases the risk of bleeding
  • Intensive care for your condition

Kyphoplasty for Your Spine

If you have osteoporosis (weak bones), you face a higher risk of compression fractures (breaks) in your spine. To relieve back pain, an interventional radiologist may perform kyphoplasty. The doctor will:

  1. Use real-time X-ray images to find the fractures
  2. Inflate a tiny balloon in the fractured bone to create a space
  3. Inject bone cement into the space to stabilize your spine

After you recover, you’ll likely be able to move around more easily and enjoy a better quality of life.

Other Interventional Procedures

Your doctor may refer you to an interventional radiologist at St. Bernards Medical Center for:

  • Biopsy – Takes a small sample of cells from an internal organ to check them in a lab
  • Dialysis access creation – Places a catheter (thin, soft tube) in a vein to allow blood to flow to and from the dialysis machine
  • Embolization – Blocks a blood vessel that’s causing internal bleeding or feeding a tumor
  • Tumor ablation – Uses heat or cold to destroy cancer cells or other unusual growths
