General Surgery

For almost any surgical procedure you need, rely on St. Bernards Healthcare. You’ll receive excellent care from our general surgeons, who have performed many procedures longer than any other provider in northeast Arkansas. And because of our advanced technology and support for your recovery, you’ll get back to your daily life as soon as possible.

Surgical Procedures

We provide:

  • Appendectomy (appendix removal)
  • Biopsies to determine if you have cancer or another condition
  • Colon surgery to treat colon cancer, Crohn’s disease, diverticulitis, intestinal blockages and other conditions
  • Endocrine surgery on the thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal glands or pancreas
  • Esophagectomy (esophagus removal)
  • Gallbladder removal
  • Gastrectomy (partial or total stomach removal)
  • Hemorrhoid removal
  • Hernia repair
  • Lung surgery
  • Mastectomy and lumpectomy (total and partial breast removal)
  • Rectal surgery
  • Removal of moles, melanoma (skin cancer) and lipomas (fatty lumps under the skin)
  • Spleen removal
  • Traumatic injury repair

Least Invasive Approach

Whenever possible, your surgeon will make only tiny incisions to treat your condition. This approach is called minimally invasive surgery. It might involve:

  • Laparoscope – Thin tube with a light and camera that shows the inside of your body and sends the images to a large monitor in the operating room
  • Surgical robot – Technology your surgeon controls to perform your procedure in a very precise way

You’ll recover faster, experience less pain and scarring, and have a lower risk of side effects.

Enhanced Recovery After Surgery

St. Bernards staff follow guidelines to help you safely get up and moving again sooner than patients used to be able to after surgery. To shorten your recovery time and reduce the risk of complications, we may:

  • Use types of anesthesia (pain prevention) that let your body “wake up” sooner
  • Explain how you can improve your nutrition and physical fitness before surgery, so your body heals faster
